…Wine and Cheese Fundraiser for Southern Ocean Birding Group Scholarship Fund
April 22 @ 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM$40
The Southern Ocean Birding Group (SOBG) is sponsoring a wine and cheese fundraiser for their scholarship fund, which supports graduating seniors from the Ocean County Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science (MATES), on Friday evening, April 22, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Long Beach Island Foundation for Arts and Science, 120 Long Beach Blvd., Loveladies, NJ.
Tickets are $40 per person and include wine, cheese, and crudite platters. During the event, a program will be presented on saving the bay islands. The NJ Bay Islands Initiative was formed in 2020 to address concerns about the loss and erosion of the islands in Barnegat, Little Egg, Great and Absecon Bays. In a short time, the group of conservation, municipal, state, and resident stakeholders, funded and developed the NJ Bay Islands Restoration Planner (NJBIRP). Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge Manager, Virginia Rettig, and Stockton University Coastal Research Center Associate Director, Kimberly McKenna, will present the challenges and solutions this coalition has been working on to improve the resilience of our islands.
All proceeds benefit the SOBG scholarship for MATES seniors graduating in 2022 and attending college to study environmental sciences. The Southern Ocean Birding Group, an nonprofit 501c(3) organization, has been awarding scholarships for MATES seniors since 2014, and with the rise in costs to attend higher education, it hopes to increase the amounts of their award. This year the fund name has been changed to the “Lesser/Bacinski Memorial Scholarship Fund”, dedicated to the memory of Fred Lesser, a former naturalist with Ocean County Parks and Recreation who was one of the inspirations for starting the group, and Pete Bacinski, the former director of the Sandy Hook Bird Observatory, long-time birder, and member and promoter of the organization.
Tickets can be purchased on EventBrite.com (Wine and Cheese Fundraiser for MATES Scholarship), emailing [email protected], or at the door the evening of the event. There will also be a silent auction of various art objects, including photography and ceramics.
